Marie lay on her bed. She felt numb. She had been shocked at the overwhelming love and fear she’d felt as she’d watched the ambulance pull away with her scamp of a brother inside it. The realisation that she loved her brother had hit her like a bucket of cold water. Apart from Bobby, she had never felt close to any of her brothers and sisters, and it had taken a tragedy like this to make her realise that although she hadn’t really taken any notice of them they were a part of her that couldn’t be erased.

She spent most of her time round her nan’s or her Aunt Teresa’s, and when she was at home she stayed mainly in her room. But somehow their presence had taken root into her very soul and she started seeing them all clearly for the first time. She had never got on with Ellen. Because you’re jealous of her, that’s why, whispered a tiny voice in her head. Impatiently she pushed this thought from her mind. Then there was Andy, he was always making jokes, never taking anything seriously, Vicky a bit like a perfect schoolgirl, her socks always that bit whiter than any of her school friends, her hair always perfectly plaited into long braids that hung on either side of her freckly face. John, the baby of the family, was always wingeing and tutting.

Then there was Patti. At seven years of age she was the quiet one of the family. Always intent with whatever she was doing, her plump face always smiling, the back of her hair always matted, no matter how often her mum brushed it. Every morning without fail her voice could be heard all over the house crying, “My socks, where’s my socks?” Patti’s disappearing socks were a standing joke among the family. Every night she would lay them out at the bottom of her bed very carefully, and every morning they would be gone. Then she would run to her protector, Ellen, whom she idolised, to plead with her to help her find her precious socks.

Marie smiled to herself. She would bet any money that it was Jimmy who kept hiding them although he strongly denied it. A cloud settled over her face – Jimmy: noisy, cheeky, annoying, lovable little Jimmy.

I’ve never told him I love him, she thought sadly. As she lay down on her bed, hands to her face, the thought came to her: Until now I never knew I did.
